Turkmenistan National team put first medals on its account at the World Powerlifting Championship in Anaheim, USA. Our compatriot, student of National Institute of Sports and Tourism Kristina Shermetova won three medals in women weight category until 53 kilogramme – two bronze medals in clean-and-jerk and snatch and one silver medal in total count. The snatch was traditional first competition. The representative of Turkmenistan National team was on third position with the result of 91 kg. she was taken over by two Olympic champions of Rio 2016 – Sopiat Tanasan (Thailand) and Suy Shuzin (Chinese Taipei). In the second competition, the clean-and-jerk, K. Shermetova was the third again, having lifted the same weight of 113 kg as sportswoman from Philippines Hidillin Dias (another prize-winner of Rio 2016), however she lost to her in additional parameters. The gold was one by the power lifter from Thailand who lifted 114 kg weight. Due to the stable performance in both competitions, Kristina gained 204 kg in total count as deservingly became the world silver medallist. Sopita Tanasan from Thailand was the best having lifted 210 kg. The bronze was won by the sportswoman from Philippines, who won Turkmen athlete at the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat in September but lost by five kilograms during current competitions. This achievement has twice the value as this is the first medal since 1993 won by Turkmen power lifters at such competitions what indicates that this sport is starting to catch up. Moreover, 2018 World championship will be held in Turkmenistan. Current championship is ongoing and we are looking forward for good news from Anaheim.
