Turkmen sportsmen have achieved remarkable success at the Sambo World Cup stage, held in the Kazakh city of Almaty. Seven more awards replenished the “medal box” of our country – two gold, one silver and four bronze medals. They were won in two disciplines of the martial art: sport and combat sambo. About 400 sportsmen from scores of countries took part in the World Cup series. The Turkmen women’s team has won one gold and two bronze medals in the sport discipline of “self-defense without weapons”. International Master of Sports Gulbadam Babamuratova has taken a gold medal, having secured a convincing victory in the weight class under 52 kg. Notably, our sportswoman had a duel with a representative of the host team in the final. Despite the loud cheers from supporters in the stands, the sambo wrestler from Kazakhstan was not able to resist proficiency of G. Babamuratova, who became the gold-medal winner. In our women’s national team, a student of the National Institute of Sports and Tourism of Turkmenistan Zuhra Madraimova (under 60 kg) and a representative of the School for Sports Excellence Rano Uzakova (under 68 kg) have become bronze prize winners. They will have to compete in international qualifying judo competitions for the Olympic Games. Another four medals (one gold, one silver and two bronze) were won by the men’s combat sambo team at the Sambo World Cup. The prizewinner of many World and Asian Sambo Championships, a student of the National Institute of Sports and Tourism of Turkmenistan Samvel Airapetyan (under 74 kg) has become a gold medal winner. In the final combat, he met with a Bulgarian sportsman and was close to losing the battle with the score of 1 to 3. But during the fight, S. Airapetyan managed to rally his force and gain a handsome, well-deserved victory. The winner’s fellow-student Novruz Ataev has become a silver medalist in the weight class under 52 kg. The Turkmen sambo wrestlers have won two more bronze medals in the weight class under 90 kg: Jovlanbeck Madaminov and Charymyrat Annagurbanov are bronze medal winners.
