Turkmen boxers have won two bronze medals at the International D. Shopokov Memorial Boxing Tournament, which ended in the capital of Kyrgyzstan – Bishkek. In our national team, Arslanbek Achilov (weight class under 75 kg) and Yakub Meredov (under 56 kg) won the awards. Nearly 180 sportsmen from Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Mongolia and other countries took part in the competitions (held in the Kozhomkul Sports Palace) to compete for ten sets of medals. Arslanbek Achilov’s success is worth mentioning. The techniques, he demonstrated in the ring, drew applause of numerous supporters. In the quarterfinal, in which the Turkmen boxer’s opponent was Abai Tolesh, an experienced sportsman from Kazakhstan, our compatriot knocked out his rival in the middle of the bout. In the semifinal, A. Achilov competed with another Kazakh boxer – Nursultan Zhanabaev. In the stubborn fight, both sportsmen demonstrated a high degree of proficiency; however, the judges awarded the victory to the Turkmen boxer’s opponent. Yakub Meredov, a student of the National Institute of Sports and Tourism of Turkmenistan, also failed to succeed in getting through the semifinals, prior to which he had gained several handsome victories. T. Ongjunda, a representative of the Thai team, prevented our boxer from taking part in the decisive fight. The International Boxing Tournament in Kyrgyzstan is the thirty-eighth time competition. However, the event differs from the previous ones: it was held under the auspices of the Asian Boxing Confederation, what attached higher international status to the tournament and attracted a bigger number of participating teams. In particular, boxers from Thailand and Mongolia participated in it for the first time. The fact that the tournament in Bishkek opened this year’s series of international competitions (regarded as an important preparation stage for qualifying tournaments for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil), gave it special status as well. Sportsmen will have a chance to win an honorary title “Olympian competitor” at the World Boxing Championship in Qatar (to be held this autumn) and the Asian Boxing Championship in Thailand (this July).
