Turkmen sportsmen have achieved remarkable success at the two large international tournaments - at the Sambo World Cup series in Minsk, the capital of the Republic of Belarus and at the International Athletics Tournament in Tehran (Iran). In total, ten medals (3 – gold, 3 – silver and 4 – bronze) replenished the “medal box” of Turkmen sportsmen. At the Sambo World Cup, the national anthem of Turkmenistan was played twice in the ceremony of awarding prize winners in the sport discipline of “self-defense without weapons”. Two of our countrymen in the weight class under 68 kg took places on the medal podium. Abdulla Babaev has become a gold medalist. He had 4 combats at the Minsk Sports Palace, completing each of them with a handsome and convincing victory. In the final duel, our sambo wrestler’s opponent was a representative of the host team - Dmitri Kruhov. Despite the enthusiastic support of his numerous fans, the Belarusian sportsman was not able to withstand smashing blows and efficient techniques of the Turkmen wrestler, who won a gold medal as a result. 17-year-old Kerimberdy Dovletov, the youngest participant of the tournament won third place in the same weight class. Undoubtedly, his ability to oppose more experienced opponents at such a young age foreshadows his brilliant career in the sport. Mergen Tejenov has won the second gold medal in the team of our combat sambo masters. The student of National Sports and Tourism Institute of Turkmenistan became the best in the weight class under 90 kg, having gained a victory over a sportsman from Belarus - Pavel Nesterenyuk. Jovlanbek Madaminov (under 82 kg) has won a bronze medal in the combat sambo competitions. In the “self-defense without weapons” discipline, the most significant result in the Turkmen team was demonstrated by International Master of Sport, our country’s best sportswoman for 2014 – Gulbadam Babamyradova, who became a silver medal winner in the weight class under 52 kg. Having won three convincing victories on the way towards the final, our countrywoman lost to Belarusian sportswoman Alesya Staroverova in tough struggle for the victory. Another two bronze medals were gained by Tejen Tejenov (under 82 kg) and Zuhra Madraimova (under 60 kg) for the team of Turkmenistan. In the international athletics tournament, which was participated by some 200 representatives from 10 countries, our sportsmen not only have won medals, but have also set several records of Turkmenistan. Thus, Irina Velihanova won in the “pentathlon” discipline, having gained 3,267 points and improved the previous national record almost by 300 points. In the same discipline, which included a 60-meter hurdle event, high jump, shot-put, long jump, and an 800-meter race, another Turkmen sportswoman Olena Hudaibergenova won second place, having lost to the winner some 200 points. Valentina Meredova won the second silver medal in our team; she distinguished herself in the 60-meter event. Her result is 6, 62 seconds and she has set a new record of Turkmenistan. In the same discipline, our sportswoman Maisa Rejepova has achieved the result – 7, 84 seconds and she is among the top five athletes of the tournament.
