Good news has come from New York – Turkmenistan was elected to the Executive Board of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women. In the course of the elections, recently held in the UN headquarters, members of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) voted for Turkmenistan’s candidacy to the above-stated entity for 2016-2018. The wide support rendered has become another striking illustration of high prestige of independent Turkmenistan, which guarantees gender equality in the country at the state level, and takes successive steps towards the development of close partnership with the United Nations in this field. The Executive Board is now a UN leading body, which coordinates activities in the field of gender equality. It was established in July of 2010 within the framework of the ongoing reforms in the United Nations, having united for greater efficiency the available resources and mandates of four separate entities of the organization, which had dealt exclusively with the issues of gender equality and empowerment of women. The Executive Board is a governing body, aimed to provide intergovernmental support to the operational activities of the UN Entity for Gender Equality, and exercise control over the ongoing work.
