Last week, a regional meeting of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies –“Peace and Neutrality” was held in the conference hall of the “Ashgabat” Hotel. It was co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan. Secretary-General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Mr. Elhadj As Sy, leaders of the National Societies of Red Cross and Red Crescent of Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan arrived in Ashgabat to participate in the forum, organized within the framework of the events held on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s neutrality and announcement of 2015 the Year Neutrality and Peace. During the meeting, a fruitful exchange of opinions was held on the role of neutrality in the activities of the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Speaking of our country’s extensive positive experience in working out foreign policy priorities to create a platform for international cooperation on a wide range of issues, the constructive international initiatives of President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov in the sphere of ecological well-being and sustainable development, the meeting participants have emphasized that Turkmenistan is an active supporter of the action plans and strategies for disaster risk reduction, adopted in the framework of the United Nations. In this context, the meeting attendees noted the importance of establishing a specialized body under the United Nations auspices – the Regional Center for technologies related to climate change in Central Asia, whose main objectives would be the development and implementation of programs aimed to provide support to the region’s countries in resisting the negative impacts of global climate change. Stepping up efforts in this field at the regional level, Turkmenistan intends to start working out systematic measures for developing a National Action Strategy for disaster risk reduction.
