Turkmen chess players won medals of all types: gold and bronze – in the International Master Group, and silver – in the International Grandmaster Group at the traditional “First Saturday” Chess Tournament, which ended in the capital of Hungary. Our compatriots achieved the success in classical chess competitions (each game lasts one hour and a half with extra 30 seconds added after every move). Saparmurat Atabaev, a 15-year-old FIDE Master, who was the best in the IM Group, became a gold medal winner. The tenth grade student of the secondary comprehensive school No.117 (Ruhabat etrap, Ashgabat city) turned out to be the youngest participant in the group. However, it did not prevent him from gaining 7 points out of 9 possible and leaving behind not only international masters, but also grand masters, including his coach – Honored Coach of Turkmenistan Orazly Annageldiev, who became a bronze medalist (5.5 points). The victory brought Saparmurat the fulfillment of an International Master norm. Thus, S. Atabaev is the youngest Turkmen chess player who has achieved such success. International Master Yusup Atabaev has become a silver medal winner in the IGM group. The student of the National Sports and Tourism Institute of Turkmenistan won the medal thanks to the victory over Alexander Battey, International Master from the USA, in the last round. On the eve of the classical chess competitions in Budapest, “rapid” chess events (each game lasts 15 minutes with extra 10 seconds added after every move) were held. Maksat Atabaev and Yusup Atabaev, brothers and fellow students, were unrivalled in the men’s group and won a gold medal and a silver medal respectively. Saparmurat Atabaev was also the best in the “rapid” chess events (among juniors), and became a gold medal winner.
