Concept of the 2017 Asian Games presented in the capital of Qatar

Enhancement of cooperation between Turkmenistan and Qatar is of particular importance given that Ashgabat will host the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in 2017. The concept of the 2017 Asian Games that will bring together athletes from Asian countries and Oceania was presented during the bilateral business forum in Doha. For the first time in the history of the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, 21 sports will be included into the programme of the 2017 Asian Games. The programme of the previous games included 12 sports with participation of 43 countries. Athletes representing 62 countries will participate in the 2017 Asian Games. On the initiative of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the Turkmen national wrestling – goresh and popular equestrian sports – showjumping were included into the programme of games in Ashgabat. The representatives of the Turkmen delegation familiarized the forum participants with the facilities in the Ashgabat Olympic Village. The large complex that has no analogues in the Central Asian region includes more than 30 facilities. Over 8,000 guests, including athletes, journalists, etc. are expected to visit Ashgabat to take part in the 2017 Asian Games. More than 8,000 volunteers will be recruited to support the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in 2017. A number of qualification events, including the international sambo contests, Goresh Turkmen national wrestling and belt wrestling tournaments, basketball, tennis, athletics and ju-jitsu competitions have been already held in the Olympic Village in Ashgabat. In April, the Village will host three other qualification events, two of them are the Asian weight-lifting and box championships. The official Mascot of the 2017 Asian Games was presented during the forum. Turkmen specialists got acquainted with the process of preparations for the 2022 World Cup to be held in Qatar and the progress of construction of two stadiums and other infrastructural facilities, including the transport ones. Project Manager of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy and the preparations for the 2022 World Cup Mohammad Al-Mulla emphasized that the V Asian Games would offer Turkmenistan with the opportunity to rank among the countries, capable to host large-scale sports events. In this regard, the representatives of the State of Qatar expressed their willingness to provide every possible assistance to organization of the 2017 Asian Games.
