H.Toychyyev, the Turkmen weightlifter, stepped on the top of podium after he won the Snatch title in the men’s 105+ kg, having lifted 197 kg. Not only did he seal his victory, but also set the new Turkmenistan record that outweighed the previous one he set at the World Championship in Houston (USA) by 7 kg. Hojamuhammet also raised the national record bar in the combined that now amounts to 427 kg. This result landed the Turkmen athlete a bronze medal. Our compatriot also won bronze in Clean and Jerk where he lifted 230 kg. It is worth mentioning that Turkmen weightlifters haven’t won gold at continental tournaments since 1994. The last top award for our country was won that year by Altymurat Orazdurdyyev, the legendary athlete and three-time world champion, at the Asian Games in Hiroshima. And now, over 20 years later, the master of sports of international class, Hojamuhammet Toychyyev, broke the scoreless streak. It was also today that men competed in 105 kg, and women faced the challenge in 95+ kg. The second competition was held for the first time in this category, therefore women’s best results in Snatch, Clean and Jerk and overall may be considered the first record performance. Weipeng Jia of China was the strongest, having lifted 299 kg (129 in Snatch, 170 in Clean and Jerk). Kuk Hyang Kim of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was second with 292 kg, and Chitchanok Pulsabsakul of the Thailand national team came last in the top three with 268 kg. Top of the podium in men was occupied by the Iranian athlete, Mohammadreza Barari (398 kg). He is followed by Huiyeop Seo (390 kg) of the Republic of Korea. Ali Hashemi (384 kg) of Iran finished third. Dovlet Sapargeldiyev, the Turkmen weightlifter, also competed in this category, and came ninth with the overall of 342 kg. It is worth reminding that besides H.Tochyyev, his teammates Rejepbay Rejepov (77 kg) took two silver and one bronze; Yulduz Jumabayeva (48 kg) and Kristina Shermetova (53 kg) took two bronze medals each. Thus, the Turkmenistan national team won one gold, two silver and seven bronze medals. This is a good result given the fact that the best weightlifters from over 30 countries of the Asian continent, including winners and top achievers of Olympic Games and World Championships, gathered in Ashgabat.
