On May 8, President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov received newly appointed Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Central Asia, head of the United Nations Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia Petko Draganov. Expressing gratitude for finding the time for the audience, the guest conveyed warm words of greeting to the head of state on behalf of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, who addressed his best wishes to the Turkmen people. Welcoming the guest, President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov congratulated him on his appointment to such a responsible post and wished him success in cooperation in strengthening of peace, security and stability in Central Asia, one of the world’s strategic regions. During the meeting, the President of Turkmenistan and the head of the UN Regional Center gave consideration to priority aspects of cooperation with its wide range of areas, new quality and content. In this context, the parties pointed out the importance of international initiatives put forward by the head of Turkmen state, including formation of the new global energy security architecture, global disarmament, peaceful settlement of the situation in Afghanistan and economic revival of this country, tackling of the issues of efficient use of transboundary water resources and protection of the environment. As stressed, the United Nations Organization regards Turkmenistan as a reliable and responsible partner, and opening of the headquarters of the UN large regional agency in Ashgabat in 2007 serves as clear evidence. At present, the Center is carrying out the active work on monitoring and analyzing the regional problems, taking part in various activities on the crucial issues of Central Asia’s development. In this connection, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General expressed his sincere gratitude to the President of Turkmenistan for his all-round support given to the activity of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy, aimed at preventing critical situations, consolidating efforts of the world community to stand up to today’s threats and challenges. Mr. Petko Draganov has assured that he will do his best to promote successful continuation of the fruitful dialogue, which is based on the extensive experience of joint work and has enormous potential.
