Representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment Protection, the Ministry of Finance and Economy, and the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan have participated in the fifth meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee for Central Asian and Caucasus Regional Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission. Organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the event was conducted via videoconferencing. The online meeting discussed the results of long-term studies of the impacts of climate change on fisheries, and measures taken to mitigate them. Climate change has negatively affected fisheries, particularly causing increases in seawater temperatures, and frequent extreme weather events. This poses environmental and socio-economic problems. In this context, the sustainable use of inland rivers and ponds, and artificial water bodies for fish farming may help to boost fish production. The Central Asia and Caucasus Region is conveniently located between the markets of Asia and Europe and FAO sees many possibilities for developing the aquaculture culture sector there.
