In Turkmenistan, first meetings of newly elected members of the velayat, etrap, city Halk maslahaty and the Gengesh are held everywhere. Chairmen and deputy chairmen of the Halk maslahaty, archins and secretaries of the Gengeshes are elected at them. On March 25, in accordance with the Constitution of the country, the deputies of Mejlis of Turkmenistan, members of the velayat, etrap and city Halk maslahaty and the Gengeshes were elected on a competitive basis by the Electoral Code and international norms on the principles of democracy, multi-party system, openness and publicity, political diversity. As it was already reported, 16 thousand 274 people were nominated as candidates for the velayat, etrap and city Halk maslahaty and Gengeshes by political parties and groups of citizens. As a result of voting, 240 people were elected members of the Ashgabat city Halk maslahaty, 1,200 etrap, city Halk maslahaty and 5900 Gengeshes. They were registered by the relevant election commissions and they received certificates. Elected at the present meetings chairmen of the velayat, etrap, city Halk maslahaty, as well as archins of towns and villages, which are the administrative centers of the etraps are included to the composition of the Khalk Maslakhaty of Turkmenistan. In accordance with the authority of elected members of these local representative bodies, they have an important role in the implementation of large-scale transformations and development programs of the state. During the meetings, the newly elected representatives of local authorities and self-government assured that they would work conscientiously, justifying the high trust they have been shown.
