Last week, the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan hosted a regular meeting of the Inter-departmental Commission for ensuring fulfillment of Turkmenistan’s international commitments in the sphere of human rights and international humanitarian law, which was attended by representatives of Mejlis, ministries and agencies, public organizations of the country. The meeting agenda was focused on the issues of summing up the half-year outcomes of work, outlining prospective plans, and others. As was noted, over the period under review, the Commission (a permanent consultative inter-departmental body) realized a set of measures aimed at ensuring further democratization and strengthening of the Turkmen society’s legal fundamentals. Having ratified main international conventions, including in the field of human rights, and as a full member of the United Nations Organization, Turkmenistan takes practical steps towards implementing the provisions of these important documents. In this regard, the comprehensive judicial reform, which is being successfully carried out on the initiative of President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov, serves as an eloquent example. During the meeting, consideration was given to a draft National Action Plan in the field of human rights, as well as to the methodology and techniques for working out the efficacious and workable programs aimed at improving the legal system and law enforcement practices in this sphere. Besides, the meeting agenda included the issues of practical realization of the “The 2011-2015 National Program of Turkmenistan for early development of infants and pre-school education” and “The General Program of Turkmenistan for the juvenile justice system development”, adopted by the special Resolutions of President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov. In the Commission’s future-orientated plan, special priority was given to adoption of effective measures for tackling the tasks set by the nation’s leader Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov. In this context, the meeting participants emphasized the necessity of further strengthening the by-now fruitful contacts with international organizations, first of all, with the UN and its agencies. A number of other issues were also considered at the Inter-departmental Commission’s meeting.
