President of Turkmenistan congratulates compatriots on inclusion of the art of carpet weaving into UNESCO World Heritage List

“As advised by Turkmenistan, in frames of the 14th annual meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) held in Bogota (Colombia) on December 9-14, the members of the committee unanimously decided to include the Turkmen national art of carpet weaving into the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. I heartily congratulate you on this historically significant event!” - says President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, addressing the people of Turkmenistan. “Inclusion of the Turkmen national art of carpet weaving on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List vividly proves that the world community recognizes our amazing carpets as a monument of art. According to the President of Turkmenistan, our country pays significant attention to developing partnership with the UN Organization, in particular the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). “As a result of cooperation with UNESCO, at the initiative of our country, such historical and cultural monuments of Turkmenistan as Ancient Merv, Kunya Urgench and Ancient Nisa were included into the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, and the Gyorogly destan and the Kushtdepdi ritual dance - in the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. “On December 12, 2019, the Turkmen national art of carpet weaving was included into the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. “As is known, at present, the state policy pursued in the country priorities the study of the historical and cultural heritage of the Turkmen people, the careful preservation and enrichment of its ancient traditions. “Our carpets, which amaze with their beauty and harmony of shades, accumulate the spiritual and historical experience of the Turkmen people. Carpet patterns, which are an integral element of the State symbols of independent neutral Turkmenistan, embody humanism, unity and cohesion of the people. Carpet patterns play a special role in the architectural design of the capital. According to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, today in Turkmenistan special attention is paid to the development of the art of carpet weaving, its comprehensive study, careful preservation of the ancient carpet patterns, their popularization all around the world. Concluding the message, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov once again congratulated compatriots on a historically significant event and addressed wishes for good health, happiness and family well-being, success in work.
