During his working trip to Mary Welayat, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov got familiarized with the construction of a combined steam-gas power plant. Power capacity of the plant is 1574 MW, and it is being constructed by the order of the State Power Corporation “Turkmenenergo” on the premises of Mary HPP. Combined cycle power plant, designed for production of 12.6 billion kw/hours of electricity per year, will be fueled not only by natural gas, but also by steam. The complex consists of four gas turbines, heat recovery boilers, two steam turbines and other technological facilities. The gases formed from the combustion of fuel, first actuate the main gas turbine, and then, in the recovery boiler, convert water to steam which drives a steam turbine and its associated power generator. Thus, an additional amount of electricity is generated. If the efficiency of conventional power plants, on average, is 34.2 percent, with the combined cycle it is increased more than by one and a half times, and is about 57 percent, significantly reducing consumption of natural gas. Combined-cycle power plants are attractive in economic and environmental terms, since the number of emissions of combustion product - carbon dioxide - is reduced by 2-3 times. Environmental friendlyness and waste-free production have been noted by the President of Turkmenistan among the main advantages of the project, implementation of which will cover the growing consumption in the country and increase the export capabilities of electricity. The contractor - Turkish company «Çalyk Enerji» - started work in July 2015. Completion is scheduled for December 2018. An American company “General Electric” also participates in the project. With the commissioning of the facility, the total capacity of Mary HPP - the flagship of domestic power industry – will double. It consists of 7 units, entered into force 30-40 years ago. In 2014 gas turbine power station with a capacity of 149.2 megawatts has been put into operation. This has increased the total HPP capacity to 1,500 megawatts. In addition to the Mary power station, a number of power plants are operating in Ashgabat, Ahal, Balkanabat, Lebap, Dashoguz and the National Tourist Zone “Avaza”. Projects have been launched for modernization and construction of power stations, construction of new power transmission lines, renewal of energy distribution system of the capital and other populated areas. Innovations and huge reserves of natural gas - one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly today fuels for power plants - in the soil of the country, contribute to overcoming any challenges in the strategic sector of the economy. Supporting efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Turkmenistan ensures smooth transition to a “green economy”, the use of environmentally friendly and resource-saving technologies in the oil and gas, energy, transportation and other industries.
