On March 15, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov is conducting an official visit to the State of Qatar. At the Cabinet session (on March 10), the head of state highlighted the importance of the Turkmen-Qatari summit talks and noted that our country is seeking to promote the multi-aspect cooperation with considerable potential. The first official visit by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov to the State of Qatar in October 2010 and the first official visit by Emir of the State of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to Turkmenistan last year (March 2016) marked the important stages in deepening the Turkmen-Qatari cooperation. Strengthening cooperation in the bilateral and multilateral formats – within large international organizations, including – the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Non-Aligned Movement and other authoritative agencies, is taking place amidst stepping up Turkmenistan’s partnership with the Arab World countries. Turkmenistan and Qatar, which have shared or similar views on topical issues, are seeking to advance the constructive political dialogue, and to expand contacts through the two countries’ Foreign Ministries. Over the last years, the State of Qatar has been rendering extensive support to Turkmenistan in promoting our country’s important global initiatives, including the proposals (put forward at the UN General Assembly) on energy security and wider international partnership in transport. As is known, the projects on building extensive transport infrastructure, initiated by Turkmenistan, aim to enhance and develop the mutually beneficial trade-economic ties. The focus is on the “North-South” transcontinental railway project, designed to become a unique bridge between Europe and Asia, and open up new possibilities for closer economic cooperation with the Middle Eastern countries, including Qatar. The Intergovernmental Commission for Trade-Economic Cooperation, which has significantly contributed to signing a number of documents on the key trends of bilateral partnership, plays an instrumental role in fostering the Turkmen-Qatari cooperation. The upcoming talks will focus on the issues of cooperation in the oil-and-gas and oil-processing sectors, and the chemical industry. Trade, transport and communications, high technology, finance and investment, education, tourism, construction, particularly large sports facilities, are identified as the priority areas of mutually advantageous partnership. In the run up to the Turkmen leader’s visit, Qatar hosted Culture Days of Turkmenistan that emphasized the importance of humanitarian contacts as a determining factor in strengthening relations between the two friendly countries. The summit talks in Doha are expected to result in signing a solid package of bilateral documents.
